Notes for Gertrude Mae Hoeper
Photo circa 1915. Buried in Itasca cemetery, Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Gert and Clyde divorced in 1930 and in 1932 she went to Grand Rapids, Minnesota, near where her parents lived. She then worked as a rural school teacher and travelled around Itasca county with her children Marion, George, and Jim. In 1938 she became the Superintendent of Itasca County Rural Schools and moved to Grand Rapids. The job was abolished when she retired in 1958. In about 1951 she married John Burbie. They lived at 619 16th Ave S. Minneapolis, Minnesota. Gert was 35 when her grandmother Ellen (Harrington) Phillips died and 8 years old when her grandfather Thomas Burroughs Phillips died. Gert did not attend the funeral of either of her grandparents.
Gertrude was at Aunt Gerty's funeral in 1950.
Obituary from the Grand Rapids, Minnesota Herald-Review 3/18/63:
"Funeral services were held this (Monday) afternoon for Mrs John Burbie, 65, who died Friday morning at Itasca Memorial hospital.
She had been a patient there since Wednesday. Mrs. Burbie, the former Mrs. Gertrude Hall, was county superintendent of schools in Itasca for 20 years, retiring in 1958 when that office was discontinued because the rural schools were eliminated by consolidation. She was the mother of James P. Hall, coach of the Grand Rapids high school basketball team.
Rev. Floren F. Schendel held the service in the Community Presbyterian church at 2 p.m. Burial was in Itasca cemetery.
Born in Nicollet, Minn., March 9, 1898, Mrs Burbie came to Grand Rapids in 1932 as a rural school teacher. She was elected as county superintendent in 1938, and held the position until it was eliminated.
Survivors include the husband of the deceased, John Burbie; three sons, Robert Hall of St. Peter, George of Mankato and James P. Hall of Grand Rapids; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Marion) Stratemeyer of Minneapolis; a brother, Dr. Phillip Hoeper of Mankato; an uncle, Robert Phillips of New Richmond, Wis; a cousin, Clarence Hoeper of Oshkosh, Wis."
