Lawrence came to America from Italy in 1897 at age five with his mother, Grace. His Italian name was Lorenzo, he went by the name of "John" or "Jack". He graduated from Gladstone Elementary School, 1231 South Damen Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, in 1907. He was a lumberjack in Minnesota near Grand Rapids. Working in the mining industry, he was transferred from Wakefield, Michigan to the Mahoning Location, a mining village near Hibbing, Minnesota in June of 1928. In 1942 he was made foreman of the Danube Mine near Bovey, Minnesota. The middle names of his grandsons, David and Brad Hall, are Lawrence and John, respectively, after him.
