...continued from here
Much like the ridiculous heroes of "Mystery Men", the character of Nacho Libre has a dignity that makes a connection to the rest of us "wannabes".
Nacho explains to Chancho, "I am the gatekeeper of my own destiny, and I will have my day in the hot sun".
To understand this movie, you must see it through the eyes of Chancho, the little boy. He is the point of view of the audience, trying to understand the Friar Ignacio (Nacho). In my opinion, the most important line in the movie (and not even included in the IMDB quotes!) is Nacho telling Chancho, "I am the gatekeeper of my own destiny, and I will have my day in the hot sun." When Chancho believes in him, the audience does, too.
It is also my opinion that this movie is as touching as it is only by accident. The dignity and the seriousness was meant as a contrast for the comedy. And maybe that's why it's not terribly funny. The dignity won out.
Saints and sinners are quite the same.
Religous Man (I am, I am)
I am I am, I am I am
I think I am I think I am
I'm glad I am
I'm proud I am
A real religious man.As I realized
The mightiest friend
Can separate
A chance from fate.
Cause you have all I need to take
That's why I think I am, I am.Cause I have prayed
I just behave
Cause saints and sinners
Are quite the same.
Cause it's my temple
The whole wide world
That's why I think I am, I am.I am I am, I am I am
I think I am
I think I am
I'm proud I am
A real religious man.I am I am
I am I am
I pray I am
I feel I am
Oh Lord I am
God knows I am
A real religious man.
