Flint's father tries to express himself with "fishing metaphors" that his son doesn't understand.
One of the underlying themes of this story is fatherhood. The "monkey brain translater" on Fint's father was just pure genius (I won't give away too much here, I promise). The clumsy and laughable fathers in this movie provide most of the emotional content, and come away with surprising dignity. Flint's father is only able to express himself through fishing metaphors. And his reaction to "sending an email to a cell phone" is perfect.
Steve, the monkey, is there to help express the story. The foreshadowing of "what he would do with gummy bears" is great storytelling.
Nothing is missed by the lack of 3-D. There is plenty here without it.
